EXCITING SOFTBALL FINISH EXPECTED
AVITH a scarcity of avail- ’ ’ able Saturdays, the Canterbury Softball Associaaion is expected to play a round of matches on Sunday, March 20, in an effort to bring the senior men’s championship to a conclusion on March 26. Two teams, Richmond and Avon, have a deferred match to play because they were taking part in the zone matches of the John Lennon Trophy tournament at Grey-
mouth on January 22. The championship is poised at an extremely exciting stage with Papanui, Avon and Richmond, in challenging positions for the title The fourth team. Western Suburbs, can not win the title but its form could well influence the final result Its recent defeat of Avon proves this point. No team has suffered less than three defeats, an un-
usual feature of the season. Papanui, with 11 points from 14 matches, leads Avon by one point with Richmond only another point in arrears. Should Avon win the deferred match it will be equal with Papanui. Richmond and Avon still have to play a complete round while Papanui and Western Suburbs will not meet again. The championship table reads:—
Papanui's three losses have all been to Avon and the last round match between these teams could prove the vital one. Avon has twice lost to Richmond and once to Western Suburbs while Richmond—the championship winner for the last three years—has been defeated by Papanui on three occasions and by Avon once.
The race for the title is far from over and the next few weeks promise to provide some of the most exciting club softball seen in Christchurch for some years.
