Dunedin Wool Firm On Late Sales
(New Zealand Press Association)
DUNEDIN, March 4
Crossbred wools, which made up the bulk of the offering, were very firm on recent northern rates at the sixth main sale in Dunedin today. Halfbreds were 2.} per cent dearer than at Christchurch and Merinos and fine halfbreds a shade firmer.
Top price was 66d for sixbales of A.A.A. fine Merino to J. C. Sanders and Son (Little Valley). The same grower received 61d for five bales of Merino hogget wool. Most of the 24,400 bales offered were of crossbred wools, from South and West Otago but there was some Merino and halfbred.
The crossbred was generally of good colour but some South Otago clips were discoloured. There was a tendency to tenderness. The high country clips were described as “serviceable,” some being marred by dust and sand.
Most of the wool was brought by European representatives but some went to Japan and Bradford buyers competed for top-making lines.
There were some passings and the New Zealand Wool Commission made a few bids on poor style Merino and halfbred clothing oddments.
Fingers Made Useful.—A middle-aged African man, who had had webbed fingers on both hands since birth, finally overcame African superstition and customs, and walked 200 miles from Lilongwe in the Central Region, to Blantyre, Malawi, for a successful operation at the Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital. He burst into tears on finding that he had full use of his fingers.
