Wahine Expected In May
(Special Crspdt. N.Z.P.AJ LONDON, March, 4. Completion of the new WellingtonLyttelton ferry Wahine is still weeks away.
A Union Steam Ship Company spokesman said today it was unlikely that trials would be held until April. Delivery would probably be mid or late May. The Wahine is under prolonged construction at the trouble-hit yards of Fairfields (Glasgow), Ltd., on the Clyde. The original completion
date was last October but during August it was learned that it was doubtful if the Wahine would begin operations before February. Labour shortages have hampered work on the ship. In November the British Government guaranteed the Clyde shipyard and engine works of Fairfields —in danger of immediate closure —a fourmonth lease of life.
At that time, the Chancellor of the Exchequer (Mr Callaghan), told the House of Commons that the Bank of England would advance loans up to a maximum of £1 million to enable the shipyard and its subsidiary to continue operation until the early spring. Later, a new company was formed—Fairfields (Glasgow), Ltd.—on a 50-50 basis between the Government and private enterprise.
