Refusal To Work Ship
(N.Z. Press Association) NAPIER, March 4.
Members of the Napier Waterfront Union had refused to work the freighter Hinakura, berthed opposite the discharging tanker, Kara, because they had no faith in promises by oil company representatives that there was no danger, the secretary of the union (Mr S. Gannaway) said today. This morning's action resulted from a derision by the union in January after a spillage from a tanker berthed at the Napier wharves. Mr Gannaway said that oil company representatives had made too many promises which they had not kept.
“When the tanker Avanti was in port in 1964 pumping disesl fuel, the piplines from the tankei to the wharf burst on two occasions in the same day,” he said. “Fortunately, i the Avanti was only pumping I diesel fuel at the time.”
