“The Press” In 1866
March 6 NELSON TELEGRAPH.—The “Nelson Examiner/’ of the 27 ult says:- “The line of wires completed for some time from the Bluff as far as Picton, is now rapidly approaching this city. The posts are erected, and the wire is stretched to within a distance of seven miles of Nelson, and the posts and wire for the intermediate distance have been again replaced since the recent floods, so that we may expect to be in communica-
tion with all the towns of the Southern Island in a few days. THE TUNNEL.—From the Provincial Engineer's return of the progress made to the Lyttelton tunnel during the month of February, it appears that it amounted to 66 feet at the Heathcote end, 40 feet at the Port end, or 1 chain 40 feet in all. The total amount driven up to the end of February was 54 chains 16 feet at the former, and 51 chains 17 feet at the latter, or 2321 yards, which, as the total length of the tunnel is 2838 yards, leaves 517 yards still to be driven.
