Unsettled Day
Overcast to partly cloudy weather and cool to moderate temperatures prevailed in Christchurch yesterday. The maximum temperature was 57 degrees which was recorded at 3 p.m. at the Botanic Gardens and at 4 p.m. at Harewood. Rain fell in light to heavy showers until soon after 11 a.m. At 6 a.m. the temperature was 48 degrees at Harewood. The temperature rose to 50 degrees at 9 a.m., 55 degrees at noon and 56 degrees at 3 p.m. The wind was south-westerly. The temperature gauge on the Government Life building showed 58 degrees at 4.30 p.m. “Pop Backing” The New Zealand pop singer, Lew Pryme, and friends would present a special concert in Auckland’s Town Hall on April 11 to raise funds to send the National Band of New Zealand to Kerkrade, in the Netherlands, to defend its world title, said the secretary of the New Zealand Brass Bands’ Association (Mr G. R. Mowat). Mr Mowat quoted Mr Pryme as saying: “Pop entertainers have had brass backing often. Now we’ll give the brass pop backing.” Fishing Rivers The Hurunui and the Rakaia rivers were discoloured at 9 a.m. yesterday, according to the North Canterbury Acclimatisation Society’s report. The Selwyn, Waiau and Waimakariri rivers were dirty, the Waiau high, and the Waimakariri likely to improve. The Ashley river was very dirty.
