RETAILING PETROL

One Application Refused One application to retail motor spirits was refused, and another was adjourned to the next sitting of the Motor Spirits Licensing Authority, by the Authority on Wednesday. An application by Breeze Auto Services, Ltd., for a licence to retail motor spirits from two pumps to be installed at service station and garage premises at 518-520 Wairakei road, and also sales otherwise than through pumps, was refused on the grounds that the requirements of the substantial garage principle had not been met. The Authority consisted of Mr J. W. Bain (chairman), and Messrs F. S. Taylor and G. Laurence. Mr J. O. Upton, from Wellington, appeared for the New Zealand Retail Motor Trade Association. Mr D. J. Clark appeared for the applicant. Mr G. S. Brockett, who appeared for Wairakei Service Station, Ltd., and Bishopdale Service Station, Ltd. and Mr H. W. Hunter, for C. J. Fitzgerald, opposed the application. An application by NorthWest Service Station, Ltd., for a licence to sell petrol from two pumps at premises in Wairakei road, opposite and west of the intersection of Breens road and Wairakei road, was adjourned to the next sitting of the Authority in Christchurch. The Authority said that the application was a little premature, and it would be adjourned to allow more detailed accounts to be furnished. Mr A. D. Holland appeared for North-West Service Station, Ltd. Mr Brockett, for Wairakei Service Station, Ltd., and Bishopdale Service Station, Ltd., and Mr Hunter, for C. J. Fitzgibbon, opposed the application.
