Six Records Broken In Girls’ Swimming

Six records were established at the Christchurch girls’ inter-secondary schools’ swimming sports at the Centennial Pool.

One of the record-breakers was the dual New Zealand champion, Tui Shipston (St. Margaret’s College).

She clipped 2.Bsec from the intermediate 55yd backstroke mark with a time of 35sec. This was also considerably better than the existing senior record. Two other Canterbury representatives at the national championships last week set new figures. Kathryn Harris (Christchurch G.H.S.) smashed the junior 55yd breaststroke record by almost 3sec and Jill Neilson (Hagley H. reduced the intermediate 55yd freestyle mark by I. The meeting’s oldest record, the 55yd junior backstroke figure of 40.3 set by Wendy Dale (Linwood H.S.) in 1960, fell to Ann Easterbrook (Christchurch G.H.S.) with a time of 39.45ec. In relay events the St. Margaret’s senior team and the Christchurch G.H.S. junior team both broke records.

Girls from these two schools had the greatest success at the meeting and each team gained 25 points. Rangi-Ruru scored 19, Cashmere H.S. and Sacred. Heart College nine each, and Hagley H.S. eight. For the first time a team representing the combined country high schools took part in the meeting. One member of the team, Nerolie Smith (Cheviot), gained second place in the junior backstroke final.
