Charlborough Fit

Charlborough galloped his way into consideration for the Peninsula Handicap at Motukarara with a fast mile at Riccarton yesterday. Ridden by his trainer, R. B. Taggart. Charlborough recorded imin 44 3-ssec in his trial with Early Dawn (D. N. Hadfield) and General Gilbert (J. Kerkvliet). They galloped on the trial grass about half-way through the training and after showers during the morning they had softer footing than most tried over ground. FAST PACE EARLY Earlier. Filspar (P. Ryall) and Summer Lad (E. G. Low) also recorded Imin 44 3-ssec, and Golden Vanity <N. Cowles) and Takatua (W. Beck) finished in Imin 44 4-ssec. In each gallop they ran the opening half-mile at least three seconds faster than the last half. Standout (A. J. Stokes) and Misjudge (R. Moir) went aboui their mile in a more orthodox way. They recorded Imin 46sec, and quickened for the last half in 51 l-ssec. They were two of the earliest workers, and had the best of the ground. SMART SPRINTS Attractive sprint trials were run by the backs. Last Dip and El Beka. El Beka (Hadfield) led We Wood (Tucker) over half a mile in 50 3-ssec. Last Dip (Cowles) also recorded 50 3-ssec. but galloped nearly two hours later, by which time the track had cut out. Last Dip and El Beka Will meet in the Ahuriri Hack Handicap. the second leg of the oncourse double at the Banks Peninsula meeting.
