Payment Held By Firms Taking £398,306 in rate payments on Wednesday and in yesterday morning’s mail, the Christchurch City Council collected all but £71,598 of the levy without the 10 per cent penalty. The total collection was £2,224.419, or 96.88 per cent of the levy of £2,296,017. Last year. 96.38 per cent was collected without penalty. The city rate collector (Mr M. Gorrie) said that the lastminute rush had been greater than usual, the cashiers handling 4000 demands on each of the last two days. “Not for many years have we had the rates falling due at the start of the month, [and it appears as if many i business people delayed payment until after February 28 ito fit in with overdraft arrangements.” he said. Only £l9OO in Riccarton Borough Council rates were [unpaid when the staff had [tallied up payments totalling i£17.960 made on Wednesday and in the overnight mail. I The total collected without) penalty was £89,750. or 97.9 per cent, compared with 97.7 per cent last year.
Help For Handicapped.— The Remuera Lions’ Club wil] provide a mini-bus and £l5OO worth of equipment to the sheltered workshops for the intellectually handicapped, the club decided, after a recommendation by the youth activities committee.—(P.A.)
