Payment Held By Firms Taking £398,306 in rate payments on Wednesday and in yesterday morning’s mail, the Christchurch City Council collected all but £71,598 of the levy without the 10 per cent penalty. The total collection was £2,224.419, or 96.88 per cent of the levy of £2,296,017. Last year. 96.38 per cent was collected without penalty. The city rate collector (Mr M. Gorrie) said that the lastminute rush had been greater than usual, the cashiers handling 4000 demands on each of the last two days. “Not for many years have we had the rates falling due at the start of the month, [and it appears as if many i business people delayed payment until after February 28 ito fit in with overdraft arrangements.” he said.
