WELLINGTON, March 3. An increase of 20,909 for the quarter ended December 31 brought the population of New Zealand to 2,677,198, the Government Statistician (Mr J. V. T. Baker) said today. Natural increase for the quarter was 9900, which was 700 fewer than in the corresponding quarter of the previous year.

There was a net gain of 11,000 by migration and movement of Armed Forces. The comparable figure for the corresponding quarter was 10,100. Live births in the December quarter were 15,509 (15,043). Still births numbered 167 (184). Deaths were 5615 (5369), including 296 infant deaths (286).
