‘PROBATIONER’ DRIVERS
A.A. Supports Plan The council of the Automobile Association, Canterbury, has given its full support to the announcement by the Minister of Transport (Mr McAlpine) that regulations are to be introduced to provide for “probationer” licences for all new drivers. Mr T. W. Milligan, president of the association, said that when probationary licences were initially advocated by the A.A. movement, along with other measures aimed at reducing the road toll, it was inexplicably rejected by the New Zealand Road Safety Council.
He said the A.A. had remained unswerving in its advocacy, and Mr Milligan felt sure all concerned in making New Zealand roads safer would welcome the Minister’s announcement.
Church Union Plans.—The Bishop of Christchurch (the Rt. Rev. A. K. Warren) has called a special meeting of the Diocesan Synod to discuss plans for church union. The special one-day meeting will be held on March 18. It will allow diocesan discussion on plans for church union in New Zealand before the General Synod in Dunedin in August
