U.S. TEST PLAN

President Johnson said yesterday that the United States hopes to conduct the first flight test on a supersonic jet passenger plane by 1970 and to introduce it into commercial service by 1974. In a message to Congress on transport problems, he asked for the appropriation of 200 million dollars in the fiscal year beginning July 1 to begin to build a prototype of the plane. The aircraft, to fly at a speed of 2000 miles an hour, will compete with the Concord now being developed by Britain and France. The President said the United States was pre-emi-nent in the field of aircraft design and manufacture, and added: “We intend to maintain that leadership."
