Fined For Smuggling
(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, March 3. Customs officers found five watches valued at £BO when they searched a 30-year-old sales manager, Donald McAulay, on his return from Norfolk Island, the department’s representative, Mr K. A. Palmer, said today. McAulay, who admitted smuggling the watches into New Zealand, was fined £25 by Mr F. McCarthy, S.M. Counsel, Mr R. L. Maclaren, said that McAulay had intended the watches as Christmas presents for friends. The 32-year-old proprietor of a Mount Eden radio and electrical shop, Vernon Keith Whittaker, pleaded guilty through counsel, Mr A. J. Nixon, to smuggling two tape recorders and a watch, collectively valued at £3O. He was fined £25.
