Ambulance Flights The R.N.Z.A.F. was called on yesterday to fly a sick man to Dunedin and today will fly a sick woman to Auckland. At midday yesterday a Devon aircraft flew Mr D. Heaney, who is suffering from a brain injury, to Dunedin for specialist treatment. He will undergo an operation in the Dunedin Hospital’s neurosurgical unit today. A Hercules will fly an elderly woman to Auckland for special treatment today. Flight Lieutenant D. W. F. Angela flew the Devon yesterday, and Wing Commander B. A. Wood will fly the Hercules today. Overcast, Showery After light rain until 10.30 a.m„ Christchurch skies yesterday were mainly overcast, and there were further occasional slight showers, ■ with only infrequent patches of sunshine. Temperatures recorded at Harewood rose from 54 degrees at 9 a.m. to 59 degrees at midday, reaching the maximum of 62 degrees at 3 p.m., when 63 degrees was recorded at the Botanic Gardens. At 4.30 p.m. the Government Life building in Cathedral square registered 65 degrees. There was a moderate southerly wind all day. Steady rain set in about 7 p.m. Whale Disappears A 15ft whale was washed up on the rocks below Benvenue cliffs, at the southern end of the Waimataitai beach, north of Caroline Bay, on Wednesday. A search by Timaru Harbour Board staff at 6 a.m. yesterday was fruitless. Apparently the whale, believed to be dead, and “earmarked” for recovery and disposal, recovered sufficiently to leave the area during the night. There was no sign of a whale floating near the port. —(F.0.0.R.) School Expenses The Christchurch Boys’ High School Board, reviewing its annual accounts yesterday, expressed concern at the inadequacy of funds for incidental purposes. Members said reserves would be “cut out” in a year at the present rate of costs increasing. The secretary (Mr P. J. Halligan) said the commission inquiring into incidental grants was expected to report soon and it was understood that any increase would be retrospective. Bursaries Christchurch secondary schools have been informed of new fees bursaries to enable teachers to improve their university qualifications for teaching mathematics and science.
