THE LICENCE LARK

decently, in Mid-Canter-bury, a driver was stopped by a traffic officer, and was duly asked to produce his licence. When he could not do so, he was asked to produce it within the regulation seven days. The licence was subsequently posted to the local traffic department office with the following letter: — “I must remember to carry my driver’s licence. “In the morning before breakfast, must take the car and have a quick look round the sheep (my licence). Ah! In the coat pocket of my suit where I put it last night when I went to Ashburton. “After breakfast. Tractor driving in the top paddock. Down the road and round the corner. (My licence.) Better get it out of the car and

put it in my old jacket pocket. “Mid-day. Stationmaster rings up. Have to take the tractor and collect that halfton of wire. Better tidy up a bit (my licence) in my old jacket. Suppose I’d better get it. “2 p.m. Back on the tractor (my licence). In the damn truck. Better walk across the yard and get it, and shove it into my old jacket again. “Whew! She’s a hot day today. “After tea. Something on at the school. A bit of a social. Better tidy up and take the family, (my licence.) Ah, well! I must be getting old. “Might be easier if I thread it on a string and hang it round my neck!”
