Sex And The Single Fly

BRIGHTON (Sussex). JJORDES of impotent flies dropping from the sky may soon lead to the extinction of the common housefly. Delegates at an insecticide conference at Brighton were told of a United States factory sterilising 100,000,000 flies a week for dropping on particularly infected areas. Flies normally produce 50 progeny a pair every two weeks, multiplying 1000 flies to 1000 million in their eightweek life cycle. But all these flies, after “mating,” become extinct at the end of their eight week life.
