A Record-Or Not?

“DECENT reports from Nelson, Invercargill and Alexandra have revealed the confusion over swimming records which exists in some quarters. Several performances by the New South Wales swimmers in the southern centres were claimed as records, and the coach of the New Zealand breaststroke champion. Barbara Jonas, was quoted as saying his pupil's time of 3min for 220 yards could not be recognised as it was recorded in a short-course pool. Both are wrong.

There is no provision for short-course records for overseas s-wimmers, but New Zealanders still have the opportunity to break standing times in the smaller pools. Thus, Miss Jonas’s effort was a record, providing the normal requirements were met.

Two types of long course (55 yards) records exist — “New Zealand,” which are open to all comers, and “resident,” which can be broken only by New Zealanders. Short course records all fall within the latter category.
