Magistrate’s Court Recaptured Prisoners Appear On Two Charges
On charges of escaping from Paparua Prison and attempting to take a car unlawfully, Harry Edmunds, aged 21, and Frank Peter Soloman, aged 26, were remanded to February 17 when they appeared before Mr E. A. Lee, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday afternoon. Senior-Sergeant G. M. Cleary said that Edmunds was serving a sentence of four years’ imprisonment and Solomon was serving a term of two years’ imprisonment. On Monday morning the prison staff decided to change the two accused from their normal work gang to one which was picking potatoes on the prison farm. The accused objected to the change, and decided that they would escape when the opportunity arose.
About noon on Monday the meal for the gang was delivered to the paddock where the inmates were working under the supervision of an officer, Senior-Sergeant Cleary said. When the officer’s attention was diverted the accused made off across the paddocks.
About 11 p.m. the accused decided that as Soloman had injured a foot they would try to convert a motor-vehicle. They went to the farm of William David Henderson at Haikett, near Kirwee, where they found a van in an open garage. They attempted to start the van, but they were disturbed by the barking of a dog and made off.
About 9.45 a.m. yesterday a farmer saw the accused near the old West Coast road. He gave the alarm and the accused gave themselves up to the police. They said that their only reason for escaping from the prison was that their work gangs had been changed, said Senior-Sergeant Cleary. The prosecution said that Renata was with three girts when a man approached them and made some remark. Renata said, “Clear off, or I’ll beat your brains in,” and adopted a threatening attitude. FOUND DRUNK Eileen Warwick, aged 62, a domestic, was fined £1 on a charge of being found drunk in Oxford terrace on February 7. She pleaded guilty.
