SYMPOSIUM SPEAKER
Substitute From U.K. The Winstone Trust, which is sponsoring symposiums on modem management practices in the building industry in Christchurch next week and in Auckland a week later, has been informed that Mr H. R. Birkett is unable to travel to New Zealand and his place will be taken by Mr R. C. Wray, head of the construction industries department at the Urwick Management Centre. Mr Wray graduated at the University of Bristol and subsequently served with the airfield construction branch of the Royal Air Force in Germany and Egypt. After six years he joined the international contracting firm of Richard Costain, Ltd., with which he was employed in deep-water harbour works in West Africa and the West Indies, a chemical plant in the United Kingdom, and major roadworks and several lesser building and civil engineering contracts. For the last four years he has been a partner with Urwick, Orr and Partners, management consultants, and is an associate member of the Institute of Management Consultants. As head of the construction industries department at Hie Urwick Management Centre, he is responsible for training each year over 200 managers from director to foreman level from construction companies which range from the largest in Europe to small house builders. He is also responsible for the development of management techniques in construction and advising on their application in the industry.
