RED SIREN, WARFARE WIN C.J.C. DOUBLE

Good Day For The Southern Stables

Red Siren and Warfare won the Canterbury Jockey Club’s TA.B. double for Southland owners at Riccarton yesterday. Red Siren won the first leg, the Provincial Handicap, with lots to spare, but Warfare only just lasted for a head victory over Red Siren’s stablemate, Bellarook, in the Amuri Handicap.

Holders of 11,617 5s tickets on the Red Siren - Warfare combination received £lB 9s for £l.

Red Siren is a five-year-old entire owned by Mr D. G. Boniface, and trained at Gore by E. A. Winsloe.

He was the logical favourite after a good second to General Gilbert in the Midsummer Handicap on the first day of the meeting, and he carried £22,375 10s of a double pool of £64,888 ss. General Gilbert ran right up to his first-day form by finishing second a neck in advance of Hushaway, a placegetter in the sprint on the first day of the meeting. Warfare and Bellarook, both eight-year-olds, improved solid records on the course by dominating the finish of the Amuri Handicap.

Warfare is owned by her Invercargill breeder, Mr W. D. McKenzie, and is a stablemate of Palisade, winner of the corresponding race on the first day of the meeting. The three-year-old Captain's Command gained some recogition for the youths in the field with a third, but Gold View, another eight-year-old, was fourth. Betting on the T.A.B. double accounted for £5615 IQs of the on-course turn-over of £48,725 yesterday. The on-course turn-over on the corresponding day last

year was £50,827 10s. The on-course total for the meeting was £98,795, a de-

crease of £10,889 10s on last year. Off-course investments yesterday totalled £109,539 ss, compared with £113.885 last year. The off-course investments for both days amounted to £159,600 ss, a decrease of £18,569 on last year. First Leg Misjudge was the slowest from the stalls and Hushaway drifted straight away in the Provincial Handicap. Red Siren and General Gilbert led them over the first furlong or so, but both riders were content to dodge the pacemaking when Standout dashed forward on their right. Standout was out by five lengths at the six furlongs. General Gilbert was second with Red Siren going nicely at his girth three-quarters of a length in advance of Ski. Hushaway was then tailing the field. General Gilbert reduced | Standout’s lead to three i lengths going to the half[mile. Red Siren, still third ■ there, moved quickly to range up to Standout on straightening up, and was clear a moment later. Red Siren had it won a furlong out, and at the end he was out by two lengths from General Gilbert, which saved second place only after a tussle with Hushaway. None of the others was concerned in the finish. Golden Vanity picked up a lot of ground for fourth but was in a gap of three lengths. The Missionary, fifth at the half-mile, plugged on to fill

that position a length in advance of Baal Hanan. Then there was a head to Ski, three-quarters of a length to Standout, three lengths to Chatsgay, four lengths to Misjudge, and a length and a half to Early Dawn. 1 Little To Spare Warfare just lasted in the face of a late challenge from Bellarook for a head victory in the Amuri Handicap. Tumble and Llanawyn drifted early and Carester showed her usual sharp acceleration to lead early ' from Sabell, Vivien Robe, Gold View, Captain’s Command and Shipmate. Carester held her lead out of the chute on to the course proper but not by much. Shipmate was close behind on the inside, but was well behind the bit. Sabell, wider out, had a stronger run in him, and Captain’s Command and Warfare were also becoming prominent. Warfare, the widest of them all, took a short lead inside the furlong, but only just managed to hold it when Bellarook cleared the ruck for a late challenge. Captain’s Command was third, his second such placing at the meeting, and he was in a gap of a length and a half behind Bellarook. Gold View was fourth another length and a half back, just beating Sabell. Then there was a length to Rae’s Hope, a neck to Shipmate, half a length to Vivien Robe, half a neck to Llanawyn, three lengths to Carester, and three lengths to Tumble.
