Obituary
MR T. LEWIS Mr Thomas Lewis, of Tedder avenue, New Brighton, who had a long association with the cab and taxi business in Christchurch, died at his home last Friday. He was 81. Mr Lewis was one of the first taxi-drivers in Christchurch. He came to New Zealand from Australia in 1906 and drove horse-drawn cabs for Hayward’s stable. A few years later he joined the newly-formed Rink Taxi Company, which had the first motor taxis in the city. Mr Lewis served with the Canterbury Mounted Rifles in Egypt during the First World War, and was awarded the Military Medal. On his return to Christchurch he joined the Blue Star Taxi Company and was on its board of directors for some years. He was also an officer of the Taxi Federation for a number of years. He was keenly interested in sport and was captain of the Crichton Cobbers’ Club when it was formed. At the time of his death he was vicepresident of the North Beach Surf Life-saving Club. Mr Lewis is survived by his wife and a son.
