Scholarships Awarded To Maori Students
CN'.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Feb. 8. Secondary school and university scholarships awarded by the Ngarimu V.C. and 28th (Maori) Battalion Memorial Scholarship Fund Board have been announced by the Minister of Education, Mr Kinsella. Secondary school scholarships have been received by Mary Hovell, of Gisborne Girls’ High School, and Frank Walker, of Gisborne Boys’ High School. The scholarship awarded last year to Ronald James Lockwood, of Hamilton Boys’ High School, is to be continued this year. The three new university scholarships to be awarded this year also were announced by Mr Kinsella, who is chairman of the scholarship fund board. They are being given to Rhys Michael Barlow, who will study at Victoria University of Wellington, Paul Samuel Ngata Howe (University of Waikato), and Deanne Betty Marina Wihongi (Massey University of Manawatu). Scholarships haVe been continued for Susan Lee Brown
(Victoria University), Eric Woodbine Pomare (University of Otago), and Paratene Ngata (University of Otago). The secondary school scholarships are awarded to applicants who have gained school certificate and whose standards of work and character have been testified to by the school principal, and who have qualified for a bursary under the secondary school bursaries regulations. The minimum qualification for a university scholarship is university entrance, gained either by examination or accrediting.
