COMMONWEALTH OF AUSTRALIA Snowy Mountains Hydro-electric Scheme OPERATIONS ENGINEER Applications are invited from professionally qualified engineers with a knowledge of operation and maintenance functions to undertake, after a further training period if necessary, the responsibilities associated with the post of Ist Executive Officer for the operation and maintenance of the Snowy Mountains Scheme. This post involves both the technical and administrative direction of staff. It is desirable that applicants should have had extensive experience in hydro-electric stations. When completed the Snowy Mountains Scheme will comprise: • Seventeen large dams. • Nine Power Stations with a combined installed capacity of almost 4,000 megawatts. • Associated 330 kV switching stations and transmission lines. • Some 100 miles of major tunnels. • Over 80 miles of aqueducts and • Several hundred miles of roads. A substantial part of the works is already in service or will shortly be in service including four power stations totalling 1600 megawatts. Salary in the range 9714 - 11418 dollars Australian per annum (EA4857 - EA5709) depending upon qualifications and experience. Initially, for at least ten years, the appointee will be based at Cooma which is approximately midway between Melbourne and Sydney and 70 miles south of the National Capital, Canberra. A three bedroom unfurnished house of approximately 1100 to 1300 square feet will be provided at a subsidised rental of 6 to 12 dollars Australian (£A3 to £A6) per week, depending on type of house available. Education of pre-University standard is available in Cooma. The appointee will be employed by the Snowy Mountains Hydro-Electric Authority for duty with the Snowy Mountains Council, which is the Body responsible for the operation and maintenance of the completed works. The terms of employment include three weeks recreation leave per annum, cumulative sick leave, furlough, and superannuation after a satisfactory qualifying period.
