SPRINGS PART
i Surging At Wharf Two mooring wire springs attached to coirs carried away at Cashin quay early yesterday morning when an increasing easterly swell caused the Japanese freighter Shoan Maru and the German freighter Cap Colorado, moored astern of her. to surge heavily against the quay. Both were head springs. The Deputy-Harbourmaster (Captain J. Duncan) said yesterday that members of his staff had kept these vessels under precautionary surveillance since the previous afternoon but at 2.30 a m. yesterday, the duty officer (Captain J Barbour) had reported a deterioration in conditions. The springs parted at 6 a m., and were replaced. There was no other damage. Ships have worked at Cashin quay for a long period without incident, and fine weather plus the use of rubber fenders has made for good cargo handling. It is the first time that two vessels have been berthed at the quay. In the meantime a close watch is still being kept on the moorings of the Cap Colorado, due to sail from the quay today. Ships Idle The Kaimai and the Holmdale were idle when work began at Lyttelton at 7 a.m. yesterday; the Tomar and Ampenan were short manned. The British India freighter Chakrata anchored off the heads after her arrival in the afternoon. An additional 11 gangs (141 men) would have been required to man vessels fully when work began. The Dutch freighter Langkoeas, due today, will probably anchor. The outlook is for further congestion.
