ALLIED ‘TRAP’

Viet Cong Escape (N.Z. Press Assn. —Copyright) SAIGON, Feb. 8. The jaws of an allied “trap” closed today, but bad weather enabled most of the Viet Cong to slip through. United Press International reported. The action, hoped to be the biggest trap of the war, in which thousands of troops closed into the deep An Lao river valley hoping to net 1500 guerrillas, was the culmination of a two-week drive covering a large area on the coast 300 miles north-east of Saigon. Troops of the United States Ist cavalry division were continuing mopping up operations today, but were meeting only sporadic resistance.
