Coin Designs
Sir, —The 1-cent is nothing like the Southern Cross, but reminiscent of a popular beverage brand. The 2-cent flax bush theme would be meaningless to overseas persons, if not to New Zealanders. The 5-cent seems to show the Japanese national sun shining on multiple pyramids. The dual denomination on the 10cent should be deleted; otherwise people will cling to the old term, “shilling.” The 20cent shows the All Black fernleaf emblem, yet the brawny footballer wears a striped jersey! The 50-cent has too much detail when reduced to coin size. When the coins are made, several denomination values will be far too small. On an unfamiliar coinage they should be especially large for easy reading without confusion. Scrap these designs and substitute dignified, typical New Zealand themes —Waitangi House, Mount Cook, a Maori face, a native bird, the Southern Cross. — Yours, etc., C. February 7. 1966.
