MARSHLAND CHURCHES

Congregations Combine Members of the combined congregations of the Marshland Methodist Church and the Marshland Anglican Church on Sunday dedicated themselves to work together in the area for a trial period of one year. They were attending a special service in St Mark’s Anglican Church. The preacher was the Ven. H. M. Cocks, assistant to the Bishop of Christchurch. He was assisted by the vicar of Burwood (the Rev. B. A. W. Beckett). Earlier in the morning the congregations attended a service in the 76-year-old Methodist church during which it was rededicated and renamed the Wesley Community Hall. The hall will be used as a combined Anglican-Methodist Sunday School. The service was conducted by the Rev. H. C. Mathews, chairman <rf the North Canterbury district of the Methodist Church of New Zealand. He was assisted by the Rev. F. G. Glen, of the Shirley Methodist Church. A combined service for the two congregations will be held in St Mark’s Church on the first Sunday in every month. Each denomination will use the same church for its own service on the other Sundays in the month.
