Trainer Drives Course Double At Blenheim
The Templeton trainer, D. G. Jones, harnessed and drove
Star Globe and UHght to victory in the oncourse double at Blen-
heim yesterday.
The stablemates returned their supporters £22 15s for £l. There were 198 5s tickets held in the combination.
Star Globe gave his rivals 48 yards start and a sound beating in the Richmond Brook Handicap, for which he was the 2/1 favourite. Mr R. C. Whitford’s Johnny Globe gelding put on an act before the start but D. G. Jones got him away safely and at the end of six furlongs he was fourth behind Lord Cecil, Lofty, and Student. I Star Globe tracked Student
till the half-mile then moved up alongside the win favourite on the home turn. In the un home Star Globe drew >ut to win by four lengths. • Student, which was late getting clear, out-finished Lofty by two lengths for second. Lofty, which had tried to lead for the last .10 furlongs, was two lengths ahead of Lord Cecil, which had received the run of the race. Vantage, the third favourite, broke badly at the start. He was pulled up when hopelessly out of it.
Easy Win Ulight shared the third line with Garriman till the home turn in the Havelock Handicap, challenged High Caste and Proudly for the lead just inside the last furlong and won easily by three lengths. High Caste, one of the longshots, had tried to lead all the way. He beat Proudly, which received the run of the race to the straight, by a length and a half for second. John Peel, one of the slowest beginners, came fast from far back for fourth. He was a length and a half behind Proudly and a length ahead of Snead, another well back in the field till late in the rade.
The big disappointment was the hot favourite. Gift Duty. He was third in the running when he broke badly at the end of three furlongs. He made ground again to be handy at the half-mile but dropped out in the straight and was twelfth at the line. Started Well
The Ashhurst-trained Supersede justified confident backing in the Craddock Handicap Mr A. J. Hansen’s Super Note mare was about the only runner which made no mistakes She began smartly from 36 yards and after two furlongs was third in the running. Six furlongs out Supersede took up the chase after Fair Play and was left clear when the pacemaker broke on the home turn. Fair Play settled fairly quickly again but failed by half a length to peg Supersede back. Morven Lad, the back-marker from 108 yards, was third, but was nine lengths away, and Mary Cord ran past breaking horses for fourth, but she was in a gap of five lengths. Won By Length/ Cantabile completed a double for the meeting in the Kekerengu Handicap, for which she was a firm favourite. Cantabile was third on the inner around to the straight, but near the furlong she was disappointed for a gap on the inside and had to be eased and brought three wide. Once in the clear she finished determinedly to win by a length. Blue Pin, which received the run of the race to. the straight saved second by three parts of a length from Nocatchem, which tracked the winner most of the way. Surely Not, fourth equal till the home turn, battled on for fourth half a length back. She outfinished the weakening pacemaker, South Forward.
