PEASE AND PHARASAL TOP FANCIES

Red Siren Tipped For Main Race Today

Pease, Pharasal, and Talic have bright prospects of coming through the Canterbury Jockey Club’s summer meeting with unbeaten records.

They will be strong fancies in minor races on the second day of the meeting at Riccarton today. Pease was scratched yesterday for the Provincial Handicap and will run against the hacks in the Pareora Handicap.

Pharasal is in the Tekapo Handicap, for three-year-old hacks, and Talic is top-weight in the Kowhai Handicap, for two-year-olds. Pease, M. J. Skelton’s mount when she won the corresponding race on the first day of the meeting, will be ridden today by P. J. Silver who can claim an allowance. Her race is the second leg of the on-course double and, with Grand Prix, Soutaine, and Glenmorven in the first leg, the Malvern High-weight, prospects of an Otago double look very bright. Ski, the high-weight winner on the first day of the meeting, will run in the Provincial Handicap, the main race and first leg of the T.A.B. double today. E. J. Didham will ride this former North Islander, which has now won at two of his last three starts for Mr D. McFarlane, of Christchurch. Of the 11 runners in the Provincial Handicap yesterday no fewer than eight have wins close up on their records. Red Siren’s close second to General Gilbert in the Midsummer Handicap could assure him of favouritism, but betting should be evenly spread over the others.

Whatever wins the Amuri Handicap, second leg of the T.A.B. double, will have to come up with a very fast gallop. Carester should carry the field along at a cracking pace from the start. If allowed to get away to a long lead before halfway this Blenheim-trained mare might be hard to peg back at six furlongs. Captain’s Command and Warfare, from Wingatui, Bellarook, from Gore, and Shipmate, from Riccarton have sprinting talents to make them strong contenders in what could be the most spectacular race on the programme.
