Film On Life Of Captain Cook

(N.Z. Preu Association—Copyright) SYDNEY, February 6. Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, the American film company, expects to spend about £1 million in Australia filming the life of Captain Cook.

The president of the company, Mr Maurice Silverstein, said this yesterday when he arrived in Sydney from New York. An overseas star would take the male lead in the film, he said. “But at this stage we are planning to give most of the other parts and nearly all of the technical work to Australians. “We are quite confident that the Australian film industry can handle the job.” No Date Set A shooting date for the film has not yet been set.

The script is still awaited from the screenwriter, Mr James Poe. Mr Silverstein said it was hoped to sign David Lean, the director of “Bridge on the River Kwai” and “Dr. Zhivago” to direct the film.

“If his commitments allow it, Mr Lean will be coming to Australia for the opening of Dr. Zhivago. We are hoping he will like it here and get interested in the Cook project. “We would love to get Lean. Let’s face it, he could make a great movie from the telephone book.”
