N.Z. Tour Might Be Her Last
ffll. Frets Attn.— Copyright! SYDNEY, Feb. 7. Vera Lynn, the singer once known throughout the Commonwealth as “the forces’ sweetheart,” arrived in Sydney today on her way to New Zealand on what may be her last major performing tour.
On Wednesday she and her husband, Harry Lewis, and their attractive 20-year-old daughter, Virginia, will fly to New Zealand where Miss Lynn, aged 47, will give shows for five weeks.
Miss Lynn, who in August will celebrate her silver wedding anniversary, told reporters: “I have had a good fling and I’ve no regrets. To bi absolutely honest, I haven’t really taken my career seriously for 10 years. “I have always made a practice, when I’ve worked, of travelling with my family If I undertake a major tour. Now this is not going to be possible very often.” The reason? Her husband recently took over a new executive post as head of the E.M.I. music publishing department “And I won’t travel without him,” said Miss Lynn. “Songs in the past three
years or so have improved enormously,” she said. “I think a lot of this is due to the Beatles’ influence. They have written some great numbers.
“I have sung a few of them on weekly radio programmes but my audience prefers the old numbers.”
