India Most Highly Taxed In World’
India is the world’s most highly-taxed country, and it is the middle classes which are most affected by taxation, according to Miss Eunice Anchees, the general secretary of the Young Women’s Christian Association in Bombay. Miss Anchees is at present in Christchurch.
“A lot is being done for the underprivileged by the Government and other organisations. The rich are all right, of course, but the middle classes have a position to maintain and they find it a struggle,” she said.

As well as this scheme, the association has three centres where about 70 schoolchildren are given supplementary diet snacks. The association also runs nursery schools, educational, literacy, and handicraft classes. Miss Anchees spent last year as general secretary of the Perth Y.W.C.A. She has been a member of the Bombay association for more than 20 years and has worked in Canada and England. After leaving New Zealand, she will return to Bombay.
The problems facing Bombay were found throughout India, but because Bombay was a commercial area and the home of industries from textiles and canning to steel and rubber, the problems were greater. People felt they could find jobs there and were coming in from all directions, with the result that houses were hard to get and slums were growing rapidly. Balanced Diet
