OTAGO WELL PLACED
(New Zealand Press Association) DUNEDIN. Dismissing the opposition for 172 in reply to its own first innings score of 247 and being 21 without loss in the second innings, Otago was strongly placed at the end of the second day’s play today in its Plunket Shield match against Central Districts.
As with the first day’s play on Saturday, bowlers held the initiative on a pitch of more help to batsmen and only 210 runs were scored in just over six hours. Central went to lunch three down for 52. At that stage Alabaster had taken three wickets for only seven runs off six overs. But after lunch D. Payton, who joined Congdon, brought life to Central’s innings during a period when Alabaster's ■ length suffered. In three overs from the spinner he cracked five fours as his first scoring strokes. Payton was out for 23, with i the total 77. Again Central ' had to try to consolidate. With M. E. Chapple coming in to join B. E. Congdon, the scoring rate dropped. The dismissal of Congdon was to herald another period of stubborn batting, until Chapple began to move into his stride and attack successfully the few loose deliveries. By tea Chapple was on 39 and G. Douglas on 10 with Central 137 without further loss. Little more than an hour later, however, the side was all out, five wickets fall-
ing for the addition of only 40 runs. Alabaster caused the break-through when he tempted Chapple into going for a big hit and had him caught in the deep. Left with 40 minutes to bat, Otago started briskly. Ibadulla taking nine runs off R. O. Collinge’s first over, but thereafter the bowlers kept the batsmen pegged down. OTAGO First Innings K.
