MEETINGS PLANNED OVER MOTORWAYS
Proposals for the rural section of the southern motorway will be explained to affected property owners at a meeting to be called by the Paparua County Council, which, at its meeting last night, decided also to invite the Halswell County Council and any Halswell residents concerned.
The council also decided to call a meeting of representatives of Paparua. Halswell, Ellesmere and Wairewa counties to discuss the protection of the Ellesmere road route, proposed by the Christchurch Regional Planning Authority as a limited access road for eventual use as an arterial road to Ellesmere and Banks Peninsula. The authority recently fixed the line of the motorway and subsidiary roads. Proposals for the construction of a deviation on the Russley road-St. Johns road by-pass to the north of the city were also discussed by the council.
It was reported that a joint meeting of Waimairi and Paparua county council representatives had been told by Waimairi’s Engineer (Mr I. Calvert) that the proposed deviation would require a new highway formation north along Shipleys road from the intersection of Harewood, Russley, Shipleys and Johns road for about 16 chains, to turn west, parallel with the unformed Hacks road to rejoin Johns road near Sawyers Arms road.

Weeds Policy—After discussing noxious weeds control problems at Hornby and other built-up areas, the council decided to adopt the same policy for urban land as for rural and the issue of a clearance notice, a final notice, and then a report for the council to decide whether to prosecute or not.
Halls Appeal.—A deputa tion from the university halls of residence appeal committee asked the council to give £l5OO over three or five years. The council asked the County Clerk (Mr A. Kelly) to report on the proposal with a recommendation. Protest.—Greenhurst street residents had protested at discharge from the filtration plant at the Sockburn Park swimming pool being run into the stormwater channel, the reserves committee reported The council decided to ar, range for the discharge to be made into the sewer, at a cost of about £450. Priorities.—The Drainage Board's programme to complete the sewer reticulation of Sockburn, Hornby and Islington by March, 1970, had been explained by the board's Chief Engineer (Mr P. J. McWilliam) and the district member (Mr J. K. Dobson), the Hornby County Town Committee reported. The council decided to give full support to the board’s loan proposals.
Grant Made.—A grant of £5OO from reserve development funds was made to the Rhodes Park Domain Board, and it was agreed to support an application for a grant from Golden Kiwi lottery profits for the development of more domain land.
Free Loan.—To help pay for the sealing of the access from Pound road, the council decided to make a five-year interest-free loan of £9OO to the Templeton Country Club. Water Supply.—Proposals for extending the high pressure water supply from Prebbleton to the corner of Springs and Hamptons roads would require more than Im gallons a year for £7O in revenue, said the engineer (Mr A. Dyhrberg). After it had been suggested that residents could contribute to the estimated cost of £1250, the council held the scheme over for a review of costs. Name Changed.—lt was decided to change the name of Queen street, Islington, to Duke street (subject to Lands Department approval) to avoid confusion with Queen street, Templeton. Renewed.—The RiccartonHornby Scramble Car Club’s permit to race on Mr I. Barclay’s property was renewed for three months, subject to all cars being fitted with silencers, and to no music being played over the public address system. It was reported that Mr I. E. B. Fraser, Hamptons road, had objected to the club’s activities.
More Seating.—A sub-com-mittee was set up to go into the provision of more seating at Denton Park. Recreation.—The reserves committee reported that it agreed in principle with buying land for recreational use, and it was decided to ask the County Clerk to report on ways and means.
Accident Record.—The St. John Ambulance Association in Auckland dealt with a record number of accident cases in the three days from Friday. There were 85 injured, 51 of them on roads. The previous record of cases over a week-end was 77, two weeks ago.—(P.A.)
