CHAMPION RESCUED

Helped Two Girls

(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Feb. 7. A past New Zealand swimming champion, W. J. Jarvis, was rescued at Piha on Saturday after he had supported two girls in 12ft surf about

half a mile off the beach. Dr. Jarvis said he was bodysurfing for about 20 minutes in the surf when he noticed two girls waving for help about 300 yards out. “I swam out to them and a strong rip took us all about half a mile out to sea,” he said. “The first girl I reached told me to help her friend. I was amazed at how calm and composed they were.” Dr. Jarvis supported the girls and swimming together they started back to shore. A few minutes later Piha Surf Club members arrived to take over and Dr. Jarvis continued to shore. A club member, Graham Major, reached Dr. Jarvis and helped him to where he could touch bottom.

Dr. Jarvis was New Zealand swimming champion over 100 and 220 yards in 1935 and in the same year won the New Zealand beltman’s and surfman’s life-saving championships. He still holds the record for the 50 yards freestyle of 23 1-5 seconds.
