SHOPPING NIGHT

Two Against Change (N.Z. Press Association) NEW PLYMOUTH, Feb. 7. Two Waitara shop owners are taking steps to prevent the Retailers’ Association move to change late shopping night from Fridays to Wednesdays. Messrs D. J. Willis and M. Barlow, both members of the association and proprietors of large stores in the main street, today lodged a notice of motion to this effect with the association’s secretary, Mr N. Harris.

The association will vote on their motion at its next meeting, on February 15. The first late trading on a Wednesday is due on February 23. The association has received a letter from the district officer of the Labour Department in New Plymouth (Mr S. C. McConnell) warning that his department would act immediately if retailers opened on a Wednesday night He emphasised the department's officers would aet without further warning and prosecutions could result.
