Belgian Doctors Stay Strike
(N Z P.A. Reuter—Copyright J BRUSSELS, February 7. Belgium’s 9000 doctors have called off a strike over free hospital treatment after a direct appeal by King Baudouin.
Only six hours before last night's midnight deadline, the country’s leading medical federation suspended the strike call indefinitely to allow time for fresh talks aimed at a compromise.
Harmel, tried to resign last week. The King refused to accept it. Political observers say it is now up to the Socialists' to make concessions. Socialist Cabinet Ministers and the party executive will meet separately today.
The doctors’ demand is opposed by the Socialist Party, which runs seven hospitals in which treatment is free.
