The U.S. ambassador-at-large, Mr Averell Harriman, said yesterday President Johnson would do all he could to avoid a confrontation in South-east Asia between the United States and China. The veteran diplomat, speaking in an interview with United Press International, said: "There are some people who are rather reckless in the United States who talk about confrontation with China, but it is not the policy of the United States to seek it or take actions which would perhaps draw Red China into the contest.”
