“The Press” In 1866

February 8 RANGIORA CONCERT.—The seventh monthly entertainment in connection with Mr. Merton’s singing classes, took place on Tuesday last at the Rangiora school-room. On this occasion the Christchurch Amateur Christy’s Minstrels, who have so often given their Services in Christchurch for charitable purposes, assisted the local singers. The concert was a most successful one, and the room was crowded; in fact many persons were turned away. FREEHOLD LAND SOCIETY.—A meeting was held yesterday in the Town Hall for the purpose of receiving names of intending shareholders in this society. Mr. W. Kent was in the chair. The rules of the society were read by the secretary, Mr. St. Quentin, after which the meeting was addressed by Messrs. W. Wilson, Alport, and Vincent. Several questions were asked by persons present

as to the objects and working of the society, all of which were answered to the entire satisfaction of the questioners. The secretary then announced that 379 shares had already been taken up, and that he was now ready to receive the names of additional members.' This invitation was responded to with the utmost alacrity, and before the meeting adjourned the list of shareholders had received an accession of no less than 180 names, bringing the total number of shares taken up to 559. In the early part of the evening it was announced that the managers had repealed the rule which prohibited shareholders from holding more than five acres of land in one block, and that a holder of five shares, which number is the utmost that the laws permit to be allotted to an individual member, will have the option of taking his land in one or more portions, as he may think fit
