HOTEL DAMAGED BY FIRE

(New Zealand Press Association) DUNEDIN, February 6. Fire gutted a number of first and second floor bedrooms of the Excelsior Hotel in Dowling street on Saturday.

Three guest rooms and staff quarters were damaged in the fire which gained a fairly firm hold on the roof at the rear of the building. The 32-bedroomed hotel had only a moderate booking for the week-end, and the bars and bedrooms were evacuated shortly after the outbreak.

The manager, Mr D. Paape. said he could give no indication of the value of the damage done. “Guests with rooms in the

affected area managed to remove their belongings but the staff and I lost a large number of possessions,” he said.
