OUT OF FAVOUR

Experience Paid Off Talic, one of only three winners in the field, won the Middle Park Plate at odds of nearly 20 to 1 on the first day of the Canterbury Jockey Club's cummer meeting at Riccarton on Saturday. Mr W. H. Williamson's Talismano gelding was the ninth favourite. He dropped out of favour after failures at Trentham, but his experience and seasoned condition stood to him on Saturday. The inexperience of some of the other runners, and of Our! Leigh in particular, could have had some bearing on the result, but Talic might still be too strong for the other youngsters over six furlongs in the Kowhai Handicap tomorrow. There was some crowding* before the race was half over, and most of it was caused by Our Leigh, which had started from the inside, but veered wide out on the track. Together was forced very wide, and Fair Gap had to be checked and switched on the inside of Our Leigh. In the circumstances Our Leigh did well to finish third, and Together did equally well! for fourth. Second. and it was a’ meritorious placing. was’ Agrippa, which started 13 wide • and made his run down the outside. Pango was a disappointing favourite: she finished eighth. I Gay Doctor, the second favourite, was fifth a neck! behind Together after appear-{ ing to have every chance.
