BALENCIAGA SKIRTS COVER THE KNEES

(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) PARIS, Feb. 6. Cristobal Balenciaga, one of Paris’s most influential fashion designers, has tried to quell the “bare knee” insurrection with skirts more or less covering the knee, United Press International, reported.

“Slightly covering the knee,” or “midknee and sometimes lower,” was the way buyers described the Balenciaga hemline.

The press was barred from the show.

“Balenciaga still is the best designer in Paris, and his show was very elegant," one buyer said. Balenciaga scorned the white patent leather little girl shoes, textured stockings and bare cut-outs that have swept Paris.

“No outer space or baby look—just clothes for elegant women,” a buyer said. While most Paris houses have ignored suits. Balenciaga showed many, with jackets short, medium or long, often with widened raglan sleeves. Most were shown unbuttoned so that the audience could see loose vests underneath. Some of the jackets came to a point in front, and appeared longer in front than in back.

Not one loose-hanging chemise dress was in the show, buyers said.

Balenciaga's day-time dresses were fitted sheaths clearly outlining the bust and waist.

Balenciaga coats for a time were straight and narrow, most at the 7/8 length. Cocktail coats were often tentshaped. Cocktail dresses included printed chiffon capes over matching dresses. His evening gowns usually were short in front and long to the floor in back.
