Two Unbeaten Teams In Pairs Bowling Tourney
Two teams were unbeaten and nine retained one life after the second day’s play in the Christchurch Bowling Centre’s open pairs tournament on Saturday.
J. Simpson (St. Martins) and K. Smith (Christchurch) are the two unbeaten skips. There was a great duel between H. Deavoll (Sydenham) and R. Lulham (Christchurch) in the first game of the day. Until the eighth head the scoring was fairly even, Lulham leading, 7-6. Lulham then took command and raced away to a lead of
12-6 which he had increased to 15-8 two heads later. Deavoll then checked Lulham’s run and over the next five heads increased his score to take the lead 16-15. On the next head, the last, Lulham took one to even the score and then gained a single "on the extra head to win 17-16. Deavoll was eliminated in the next game, again being beaten by one. Lulham was little troubled in his next game, which he won 24-17. However, he could not match the accurate play of Simpson in the next and even after scoring a possible six went down 13-19. But Lulham retained his one-life when he came from behind to beat W. Wilkinson (Hornby), 17-16. Wilkinson had led 15-10 with five heads to play. Simpson had two easy wins in his first two games before beating Lulham and then went on to retain his two lives when he beat E. Colville (St. Albans), 24-21. Smith, the other two-lifer, was not extended in his first two games, beating A. L. Large (Fendalton), 27-13, and B. Christensen (Mt. Pleasant), 24-17. After drawing a bye in the third round he beat K. A. Wilkie (Linwood), a onelifer, 25-18. L. Bradbury (Cashmere), who began the second day as a one-lifer, went through anxious moments to retain jiis one life. He scored six on the last three heads to beat R. Smith (Woolston), 18-16; again came from behind to beat C. B. McNalty (Shirley), 18-16, and finally took a three on the last head to defeat R. Morrison (Papanui), 13-12. The final rounds of this tournament will be decided on the South Brighton green next Saturday. Results were:— U.S.A.
