Turner Leads Otago Rally
(New Zealand Press Association) DUNEDIN. After being dealt a series of shattering blows in the first two hours of play, when four wickets fell for only 49 runs and K. Ibadulla was out to the first ball of the day, Otago recovered in its Plunket Shield match against Central Districts.
At the close of play, Otago had scored 235 for nine. At the close of play on Saturday, Otago had scored 235 for nine. The recovery was largely due to an innings of tremendous character by the 18-year-old G. M. Turner, who missed a century by only five runs. He came to the wicket to face the second ball of the match and remained there for 337 minutes until he was seventh man out and the total was 209. Turner’s innings of 95 (nine 4’s) had a full share of growing pains and looked as if it would never get under way when he was on 11 after two hours of hatting. But in the first afternoon session he added an attractive 52 runs while his batting flowered.
for 209, eight for 226, nine for 226.
Useful Partnerships The recovery, however, was not all due to his dogged defiance against an attack which although lacking penetration was a model of accuracy. R. D. Stewart, who was playing his first Plunket Shield match of the season, helped the score along to 110 for five, and J. C. Alabaster scored a fine 57 while he and Turner were adding 74 for the seventh wicket. Otago lost Ibadulla to a catch behind by R. M. Schofield off the first delivery sent down by R. O. Collinge. It was his only success of the day’s play. Throughout a hot day, Central’s fielding rarely faltered. There was only one blemish on the ground and one in the air, when Aibaster was dropped off the bowling of B. H. Yuile when the batsman was on 33. Behind the wickets, R. M. Schofield gave a fine display of ’keeping. He took all four catches which came his way. OTAGO • First Innings K. Ibadulla, c Schofield, b Collinge ... 0 G. D. Beer, c Hampton, b Kinsella .. 22 G. M.
