HELD IN CHECK

Collegians Fail

Sixty-five runs behind on the first innings, Old Collegians came back into the game sharply when they dismissed Riccarton for 85. However, they themselves were struggling at the end of the day. They were set to score 150 in 140 minutes for victory but when stumps were drawn eight Old Collegians wickets were down for 105, Neither side batted well on a pitch that held no terrors, the only player emerging with distinction being Bishop who, after batting almost throughout the Old Collegians’ first innings, was unbeaten at the end of the second.

It was a day for the medium paced and fast bowlers, 16 of the 21 wickets falling to them. Kiddey took his total for the match to nine; Motz, although plagued by no-ball trouble, also bowled well; and Dawson spear headed the Old Collegians’ at tack.

Clark, the Old Collegians off spinner, had a good match, again bowling accurately in Riccarton’s second innings. Umpires: Messrs A. R. Knight and J. W. T. Owens.
