Sydenham Now 11 Points Ahead

Sydenham swept to victory over West-University and an 11-point championship lead on Saturday. A win achieved only six minutes from time was based principally on a crowded hour of glorious batting from K. Thomson and D. L. Gallop, in their partnership of 121.

With two rounds to play, Sydenham now has excellent prospects of winning the championship for the first time in 20 years. However, there must now be the chance of upsets in the next round, which starts on the last day of the final Plunket Shield match in Christchurch, and thus deprives the top clubs of leading players. Thomson, in 61 minutes, made 82 in an extraordinarily entertaining innings and Sydenham topped 200 for the first time this season. WestUniversity set out after 255 in 188 minutes but never looked likely to get them, and more good spin bowling carried Sydenham to its success. Old Boys, however, met stout Lancaster Park resistance and had to be content

with first innings points. In the senior B section, St Albans overhauled Riccarton by beating East-Shirley outright Scores:— SENIOR A Old Boys 207 and 139/9 dec. beat Lancaster Park 170 and 113/5, by 37 runs on the first innings. Sydenham 186 and 211/8 dec. beat West-University 143 and 197, by 57 runs. SENIOR B St. Albans 196 and 68/1 beat East-Shirley 108 and 153, by nine wickets. Riccarton 236 and 85 beat Old Collegians 171 and 105/8 by 65 runs on the first innings. Points: Senior A: Sydenham 79, Old Boys 68, Lancaster Park 57, West-University 56. Senior B- St Albans 62, Riccarton 57, Old Col legians 22, East-Shirley 1.

Successive Sixes Thomson's 82, which included 6s from three successive balls was the top score of the day Gallop made 50, and half-cen-turies were also scored by C.

L. Bull (Old Boys), B. C. Irving (Lancaster Park), and A. T. Bishop (Old Collegians). For Sydenham, J. M. Mclntyre had a match total of nine wickets and so did J. W. Kiddey for Riccarton. D. J. McKendry again bowled well for Lancaster Park to take five second-innings wickets.
