Consistent Sailing Gained Yachting Honours
Honours were evenly shared after two days yacht racing at the first Christchurch Yacht Club regatta.
Finn Sarby (B. G. de Thier) and Jolifin (J. S. Wearn) dominated the Finn class, the current Leander champions, G. and C. Cooke, took top R class honours from Frenzy, sailed by F. G. B. Simpson, and the young Mount Pleasant skipper, B, Trethewey, held off a strong P class challenge from R. Ellerm. In the Javelin class, Spindrift (W. H. Beere and P. Skelton) held a slight edge over Snatch (J. Boag and R. Templeton), while B. Lyons and M. White took most of the O.K, class honours. In the Moth class, W. Radford was the most consistent skipper. The regatta was immaculately organised and extremely well run and was favoured by the best possible weather. In each case the championships were won by more consistent sailing and fewer mistakes.
A major attraction of the week-end’s racing was the Sumner Bay race for the Pegasus Bay Trophy. It drew a mixed fleet, made up of seven Finns, four R class, two Senior Cherubs and a Catamaran, an X class and a Javelin.
This race proved something of an anti-climax, sailed in a light and fading nor’-wester which gave way to a faint easterly at the finish. Because of the conditions the course was shortened.
By the way Unique sailed right up with the Javelin Spindrift and fairly close to the first boat home, the B class catamaran, Elusive, it was certain that the Cookes were in the running. Their only worry was a strong and brilliant performance by the visiting Rotorua yachtsman, J. T. Farmer, who completely outclassed his Finn opposition, including de Thier and Wearn.
The big roll and the cross sea upset a lot of the Finn skippers, and the crewed boats, mainly the R class, dominated the race.
Sunday afternoon’s Estuary racing was abandoned after none of the boats finished within the time limit. Results:—
