Looking To Future

It was estimated that there were about 90,000 sheep in the Ashburton Gorge, including some of the adjacent rolling downs country, Mr G. McFadden, a farm advisory oflicer of the Department of Agriculture in Ashburton. said at Mount Somers last week-end at the start of a Held day organised by the high-country section of Mid-Canterbury Federated Farmers.

It was his view that ultimately there would be at least two or three times the present level of stocking.

When they drove through this country, he said, the visitors would notice large areas of rolling country that would respond well to sodseeding and there was a potential for much increased winter production from the flats.
