Gift Duty Picked At Blenheim Today

< from Our Own Reporter)

BLENHEIM.

Gift Duty, a solid finisher for minor placings at his last two starts, could gain a much deserved win for his Culverden G. N. Dalzell in the Otaki Handicap at Blenheim today.

The Otaki Handicap is the first leg of the on-course double on the first day of the Marlborough Trotting Club’s annual meeting.

ley Memorial Handicap yesterday, but they were not expected to be among Chaman’s strong rivals. Most opposition for him could come from Frosty Heather, Our Smokey, Chief Smile and Unreal. The fine spell in Marlborough is expected to continue. The track wild be firm and fast. The last time Gift Duty ran was at Hororata a fortnight ago. There a brilliant late run from far back in the field earned him third place behind Dryden Pal and Our Smokey, a dual winner at Nelson meantime. Two of the hardest for Gift Duty to beat might be Proudly and Cantabile.

MARLBOROUGH HANDICAP, £500; 2:17 class; 2m.

The mile and a quarter should be very much to Proudly’s liking. She is usually a reliable beginner and has a good turn of pace, but to date has lacked sufficient stamina to run her races right out over the middle distances. Cantabile has had only one previous start. That was at Hororata, where she shaped well to finish fifth. If that experience has proved beneficial she could be a major contender today. Second And Fifth Star Globe could round off the course double for Canterbury stables in the Hillersden Handicap. After a good second on the first day at Nelson he was confidently backed on Monday, but a faulty beginning cost him a winning chance, although he improved several places in the last half-mile to finish fifth.

On Probation and Chaman, stablemates in C. S. Donald’s Belfast stable, will form a popular combination for the T.A.B. double, which will be run on the Marlborough Handicap and the Breayley Memorial Handicap. Viewin is the only notable candidate so far to have dropped out of the Marlborough Handicap, but she was only one of the strong form rivals with which On Probation will have to contend.

The other strong chances include Calm Autumn, Bichard Hanover, My Word and Third Chief.

All Baba and White Smoke were scatched for the Breay-
